The name Manawa is derived from our Tipuna Manawatu Manawaoho Manawarere Manawakotokoto. Ngati Manawa trace their descent from the Tainui, Te Arawa and Mataatua canoes. Its eponymous ancestors are Apa-Hapai-Taketake and Tangiharuru. The Rohe of Ngati Manawa can be best defined in the inherent korero from the last Paramount Chief Harehare Atarea (right)
Ngati Manawa is a Central North Island Iwi based in Murupara whose traditional tribal area includes the Kuhawaea and Kaingaroa Plains and the middle and upper reaches of the Rangitaiki River.
According to the 2006 cenus data, Ngati Manawa has a population of 1,938. Ngati Manawa's beneficairy register has approximately 3,500 members.
The area in which Ngati Manawa claim interests for Treaty Settlement purposes covers approximately 249,000 hectares.
The claims of Ngati Manawa relate primarily to the New Zealand wars, Crown actions and omissions in respect of the operation and impact of the Native Land Laws, the Crown's land-purchasing techniques particulary in respect of the land they wished to retain and twentieth-century land, river and forestry development. |
