NGATI MANAWA IWI REGISTRATIONS
Te Runanga o Ngati Manawa aims to achieve a comprehensive settlement of the historical claims of Ngati Manawa for the benefit of future generations of Ngati Manawa. Your membership of Ngati Manawa is an important part of this settlement process and we urge you to participate by registering on the iwi register.
Why Register?
If you are of Ngati Manawa descent, you are a beneficiary of Te Rūnanga o Ngati Manawa and are entitled to benefit from Treaty settlements. Your interests as a beneficiary, as well as the interests of Ngati Manawa as a whole, are best served by a large and unified membership base.
By registering as a beneficiary, you will ensure that:
the Ngati Manawa iwi register is an accurate record of those whom Te Rūnanga o Ngati Manawa represents in the Treaty settlement process;
you are kept informed of developments through regular communication from Te Rūnanga o Ngati Manawa about progress in relation to Treaty settlement negotiations as well as other developments within the Rūnanga and the iwi;
you are able to contribute to and participate in the decision-making processes associated with the settlement of the historical claims of Ngati Manawa.
By having an accurate record of the size, distribution and age of our member population, Te Rūnanga o Ngati Manawa will also be able to develop a vital profile of the iwi. This will be of significant assistance to the Rūnanga as it develops policies and initiatives to address the needs of our whanau, hapū and iwi.
We encourage all descendants of Ngati Manawa to register with us.
Who Can Register?
In order to register as a beneficiary of Te Rūnanga o Ngati Manawa, you must be able to trace descent from a hapū of Ngati Manawa. This includes all children regardless of age. If a child is under 18 years old, a parent or guardian can sign on their behalf.
If you want to register and think you are from Ngati Manawa but are unsure of your whakapapa, the staff at Te Rūnanga o Ngati Manawa may be able to assist you. Call 07 366 5736 or email us at manawarere@xtra.co.nz
What Information Do I Have To Provide?
The primary information that is required, beside personal details, is your whakapapa. You are required to provide your whakapapa to a grandparent or great-grandparent who is of Ngati Manawa descent. If you wish to whakapapa back further, this would be most welcome. It is optional whether you wish to identify your marae and/or your hapū (if known). In the unlikely event that we have questions of clarification in relation to your whakapapa, the Rūnanga will contact you.
What If I Have Already Registered With Another Iwi?
It is very common for Māori to be able to whakapapa to multiple iwi. Many members of Ngati Manawa can also whakapapa to Ngati Whare, Ngati Awa, Tuhoe, Te Arawa and other iwi.
If you have registered as a beneficiary with another iwi, there is nothing to prevent you from registering as a beneficiary with Te Rūnanga o Ngati Manawa provided you can whakapapa to Ngati Manawa. This does not affect your eligibility as a beneficiary of another iwi.
